Signs It's Time to Return to the Gym

Google images
You may know this is the time of year I clear out of the gym temporarily to make way for the resolutioners. It's my tradition. But this week, let the record show, I made an unlikely, unplanned, premature return. The universe was giving me signs:

1. Our water heater blew up and the gym was my only chance for a hot shower, unless I wanted to saunter down the block in my robe, knocking on neighbor's doors. May as well sneak in a workout before that shower.

2. Our home internet connection went down. Hard. For days. Imagine the time this freed up.

3. My ornery hamstring was behaving so nicely, it's virtually begging to go back to that yoga class.

4. It's finally snowing like a mother. Ok, you're right, this did not stop me from getting my run on. But I swear those plows are gunning for me.

5. Dog attack. Yes another one. Not sure what's going on with all the canine hate lately. I suspect my new lotion is redolent of beef jerky.

So yes, back to gym I went and know what? It wasn't even packed! No need to park in the next county and shuttle bus in. Resolutioners where are you? Other than two obvious ones in my spin class, everything seemed pretty status quo. Who knew?

Has your gym been packed?

  1. I found that the gym was surprisingly "normal" yesterday too. Where is everyone two weeks in?

You've had quite a week! The weekend can only get better. And please keep the snow where you are.

  2. I've been going to the gym at 7am and it's almost dead! Not that I'm complaining, but I was expecting a lot more people :)

I think I'm about to take a few day break from the internet....but then again, I always say that and it never happens!

  3. We avoided the gym this year by buying new equipment for our garage. I gave myself from the weigh lifting until after the marathon so I probably should get back out there one of these days.

  4. Congrats Shelley! I've been wondering where you've been - it's totally like ME to go days at a time without posting, but not so much you :)

No gym for me, so I can't comment on that one. One of the worst and best things about our giant power outage last summer was lack if internet - so productive!

  5. I have been at the gym for a while now towards the end of December. I hate the cold, any cold. My gym has't been packed really, but then again, I am there by 5am. I just have this experience there that I really hate with gym manners. I might post some time in the near future. A shower at the gym, yeah, use their hot water up. hahaha. Internet? I haven't had that experience in a long time. Take care, and glad your hamstring is feeling better there.

  6. I haven't been to my gym yet this year either! I was tapering for a 1/2 marathon which was over the weekend so I didn't really need to go to the gym but I think it's time for me to venture back over there. I fully support those trying to get fit but they sure do make it difficult for me to get on a treadmill! Fingers crossed.

  7. It's months like January when i don't miss not going to the gym at all.

Is your water heater and internet fixed now? That sounds horrendous!!

  8. I haven't noticed if my gym is busy or not. When I went this week it seemed to be the same people that were going the last time I went. I guess I was the resolutionist as I hadn't been there in awhile!

  9. My gym was surprisingly quiet last night too - no problem getting an elliptical and on any of the weight machines I wanted to use.

Are people really giving up that easy?

  10. No gym for me. When we went to Lithuania this summer for a couple of weeks, no Internet for me. The reentry was the hardest part.

  11. I went to Pilates Monday and I couldn't even find a place to plop my mat (I did shove some elderly lady out of the way, it's all about me you know). Wed I went with Abbey at her gym and I had to stand there for a treadmill for awhile. I made sure I kicked some butt on the thing by making sure I was running faster than the two guys next to me. Imagine when I could only run 4 miles.

I heard you guys were getting tons of snow. Please don't get snowed in next weekend!

  12. No gym for me. I will run outside until the temps drop below -20.

  13. I'm planning to join a gym this year, but not until at least March so I can miss all this fun!

  14. My gym is pretty new and has limited membership so it was great this morning.
...I was also there at 5:20am so there aren't many early birds in town apparently.
That is scary about the dogs..I haven't encountered anything like that so I hope I don't!

  15. Crap. I just knew this would happen. Communicate with me too often and BOOM! The attacks by things when you are running start. I am a DOG MAGNET, and it is obviously carried through. My apologies. Anyway, the warm shower sounds nice!

  16. Ahhhhh no internet!? My children would melt down into sad little puddles of despair.

Will you have extra time in SoCal!? Would love to meet you!

  17. No internet sucks!! No water heater sucks!! The snow sucks!! The dog chasing sucks!! Geesh what a week!!

  18. The gym on Tuesday at 5pm was packed, but Thursday at lunch, completely empty...it's been strange! Good for you getting out to run though!

  19. I don't have a gym, but I have seen a lot more runners out lately.

And most of my vacations are unplugged, so longest one was probably two weeks when we went to France.

  20. ha ha too funny about showering at the gym. I am always justifying my gym membership based on the amount of home utilities I save by getting ready at the gym. :)

My gym is not nearly as busy this year as usual either. Thank goodness!

  21. I haven't been inside a gym for quite a while. Even though I thought I would use S'ghetti bball practice as an excuse to go. If I had they would have thought I was one of those resolutioners!!

I try to avoid internet withdrawal by limiting useage on the weekends but I get lightheaded and have to sneak in my fix.

YIPEEEE! Thanks so much! I am super excited about these!

  22. Those resolutioners have absolutely no staying power. It's only the 13th!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Still pretty busy in my gym with lots of new resolutioners, sporting that very "chic" fragrance, Icy Hot - it's simply pure menthol indulgence!

    ReplyDelete
  24. About the New Year's Resolution: I'd lose weight but I'd also buy a bigger basket to stay more comfortable.
Gym, pool, treadmill, workouts, bike .... the most important thing is to do something and not to be lazy.
Never off from internet, if it doesn't work at home it does in my office.

  25. I know that few of us want to carry ANYTHING with us on a run, and fewer still want to carry Yet Another Thing, but I've carried a MACE® Canine / Dog Repellent (about 4 inches long, with a diameter just a tad bigger than a dime) on every bike ride and run since July.

I actually had the "opportunity" to use it one morning last August. The spray easily went 10-12 feet in a stream, hitting the dog in the face. It turned and ran back to its yard, pawing its face. This was on the way out on an out-and-back.

When I came back (about 20 minutes later), the dog didn't look the least bit the worse for wear, and just sat in the middle of his yard looking at me...didn't move or bark.

Non-lethal, no permanent damage, and works on the two-legged variety as well I'm told. I think it costs about $10.

  26. I love the newbies in classes - although I have to say, I also remembering being a newbie! :) But for real... Props to you for still running in the snow. It dropped below 40 this week and I was like "I CAN'T FUNCTION IN THIS????!!!!" And I didn't leave the house for days (That is only a minor exaggeration).

  27. Gym? I remember going to the gym this summer. Seems like it was a nice place from what I remember...

Go without internet? Bite your tongue!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I am avoiding my gym in /January!!!
I have been a few times...it was packed....me no likey

internet break...a few days when it went down a few months ago and also when I had a lovely virus. I dont like internet break because they also mean telephone break and that is not good for my stress because my family is far away.

  29. I don't go to the gym. I wish I could, but for this time in my life, home exercises it is. Great news about the hamstring!

And, seriously, MACE. Take mace. For some reason since I've started carrying it I haven't had dog problems like I used to. (And I live in a rural farm town which means everyone has at least one dog, and they are never tied up). It's like they can smell it in my spibelt. Or they know I have it, and they know I'm not afraid to use it. Who's the Alpah Male now?!

  30. The gym has been more crowded than usual, but not like I expected it to be!

    ReplyDelete
  31. The gym has been crowded, but not like it was last year. Although I've been going at like 930 in the morning. ALL the treadmills full? Madness. But TKB last night? Same always, and that is usually when it is super crowded. So. Don't know.

    ReplyDelete
  32. The gym has not been packed but the pool has.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I don't go to a gym so I have no comparison to offer. But I'm glad your gym was normal! Sorry about the dog attacks, but your comment about your lotion had me in stitches laughing.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I broke down and went to the gym yesterday (driving rain and crazy wind combined with icy roads sent me indoors) - it was eerily quiet! I loved it!

Be careful of those dogs...you might want to change lotions :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. I don't go to a gym any longer. I kind of miss it. I'm contemplating a yoga studio but think I might wait a week or so for when the crowds thin out. And those are some mighty compelling signs!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I went this week and I was the only one on the treadmills for 2 days. Ellipticals and bikes were full, though. Don't know if I've ever looked forward to a shower at the gym ... but without hot water I guess I would, too!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Wow, those are some serious signs it was time to go to the gym. It's been so nice here so far this winter, I've been able to run outside and haven't hit the gym except for the pool.

    ReplyDelete
  38. i've been very surprised by the lack of resolutioners all year! we had an early snow so i thought that was it, but they still haven't arrived (and our snow never lasts more than a day)

    ReplyDelete
  39. I go to the gym at a college (where I work) so there are always times that it is packed and when it isn't. Just depends on when you are there. The worst part is parking when there is an event going on at the field house and we have to park really far away!

    ReplyDelete
  40. i can't go without internet...even on vacation! i know, i'm horrible.

    ReplyDelete
  41. My friend's dad showers at the gym EVER day, regardless of what's going on in life. Seems crazy to me at first, but I guess it's a good way to saving money and not feeling bad about a super super long hot shower haha.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Our gym has been less packed too. I admit that I do go through phases where most of my showering happens at the gym. :) Internet is tricky--I try to do forced vacations on some holidays or weekend camping trips, and that's about it!

    ReplyDelete
  43. dog attack?!?!?!?!?!? what happened and are you ok?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Our gym hasnt been too bad. It is always bad weekends and evening and the popular gym classes.

another dog attack that is just nutso!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Getting back to the gym, awesome message! I need to do that! See you soon!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Perhaps not idea reasons to go back to the gym, but hey - at least it worked!
